Collaboration

Multiple users can edit the same Safe Task diagram, but only one person can edit it at a time. This protects the integrity of the diagram: if two people made changes simultaneously, their edits could conflict and overwrite one another, leaving the diagram in an inconsistent state. To prevent this, only one user holds editing control at any moment. When a second user (User 2) opens a diagram that User 1 is already editing, they’re asked whether to take control or open a read-only copy.

If User 2 takes control, they can edit the diagram and User 1 is moved into a read-only copy until they refresh the page and retake control through the pop-up. On refresh, User 1 sees the latest changes.

A user whose editing control is taken may lose their most recent change to the diagram.

Open a diagram in read only

Choose one of these options:

  • In your project folder, click the ellipsis (…) on a diagram and click VIEW READ ONLY.

  • In the diagram, a pop-up appears if someone is currently editing. Choose to open a read-only copy. The top-left corner of the Diagram Editor shows that you’re in read-only mode.

Take control

From read-only mode: refresh your browser. When the pop-up appears, click TAKE CONTROL to gain full editing rights.

While someone else is editing: if someone has edited the diagram within the past hour, a pop-up appears when you open it. Click TAKE CONTROL to edit. User 1 is moved into read-only mode and may lose their latest change.
